Last month I had the opportunity of traveling to London with the Burberry team to attend their fashion show and get a glimpse inside the world of Burberry Beauty, now available at Sephora. What did I come out with? Lots of beauty knowledge from one of the best makeup artists in the business, Wendy Rowe, who is also the Burberry Make-up Artistic Consultant. I was able to put together a list of my top beauty questions and pick her brain on everything from tips on applying mascara, to covering under eye circles, to finding out what she keeps in her personal beauty bag. Keep on reading to see the entire interview, along with a step-by-step beauty look using some of her recommended products.
Q. As a top make-up artist, what is in your personal makeup bag? A. Burberry Fresh Glow B.B. Cream, Sheer Concealer, Effortless Contouring Pen, First Kiss Glossy Lip Balm, Effortless Blendable Kohl in Golden Brown and Eye Colour Silk in Almond.
To begin this look, I’m using the Burberry Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base (No.1) and Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Foundation (No.12). Both create a silky smooth, dewy base. I usually shy away from liquid foundations, but this one is so light that it doesn’t feel like I have makeup on.
Q. What is the best technique for applying concealer under the eyes to reduce dark circles? A. Use Burberry Sheer Concealer no. 3 on the area that is dark or blue, not right up against the lash line. Where it dips down the most use no. 1 or 2, tapping it in. It will lift the eye completely.
I decided to try Wendy’s recommendation of applying the rosy-beige shade of Burberry Sheer Concealer No.3 before adding the soft-beige shade of No.2 under my eyes. The combination not only covered my dark circles, but left my eyes looking bright and more awake.
Q. What are the essential Burberry products that you most frequently apply to your models? A. Burberry Effortless Contouring Pen – I can’t live without this product, I use it on everybody. There is no one I don’t use it on in some way, shape, or form. Burberry Sheer Concealers are a miracle product I just can’t live/work without using. Burberry Eye Colour Silk because they are so easy to apply and the colours are really natural.
Wendy told me that her personal favorite Burberry Beauty makeup item is the Effortless Contouring Pen. I remember seeing her use it on Burberry Model, Amber Anderson, while we were in London. She applied the pen under the cheek bones, along the jaw line and nose. The thing I love most about this pen is that it blends in so beautifully, creating a natural contour.
Q. What would your models say is their “can’t-go-without” makeup item? Tool? A. Burberry Effortless Contouring Pen. Cara, Suki, Sienna, Victoria Beckham, Kate Hudson, Anja all LOVE this product.
I lightly dusted a little bit of the Burberry Luminising Powder to to finish the base of my look.
Q. What tools and/or techniques do you use for blending? A. I use my fingers to blend a lot. I also use dry brushes, and sometimes I’ll use a sponge, but not very often.
Like Wendy, I mostly use my fingers for blending! To add a little bit of color to my face, I applied a small amount of the Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom to the apples of my cheeks.
Q. Let’s talk mascaras! What is the best way to apply mascara? Do you curl the eyelashes first? A. Definitely curl the eye lashes first, then start at the base of the lash. If you’re blonde this is super important, as it enables you to get the root of the lash.
To be honest, I’ve never used an eyelash curler (they actually kind of frighten me!) but having long lashes, I haven’t had a need to. I do always start at the base of the lash when applying my mascara. For this look, I applied a small cat-eye with the Burberry Effortless Liquid Eyeliner. This is hands down my favorite liquid liner – the tip of the pen helps create the perfect definition.
Q. What do you believe will be the biggest trend in makeup for Spring 2016? A. Super nude with a splash of colour on the lips, which you can achieve with Burberry Lip Velvet in Oxblood.
I wore the Oxblood shade to the Burberry show while we were in London and can’t wait to wear it more this fall (and into spring!). For the look, I decided to give one of Wendy’s other lip colors a try, Burberry First Kiss Glossy Lip Balm in Sweet Plum.
