A couple weeks back, we met my friend Rose and her fiance in Washington D.C. for a trip we’d been extra excited for! We had “perfectly” timed our trip to fall exactly at peak bloom of the amazing cherry blossoms that D.C. is known for. As luck would have it, a huge cold front came days before our trip, dropping snow and temperatures, right when half of the cherry blossoms had already started to spring open. The freeze killed nearly everything that had started to bloom, and it pushed back the rest of the bloom a few weeks past our trip. So with a newly open schedule, we decided to spend our 36 hours enjoying all of the other wonderful things D.C. has to offer!
Thomas and I have both visited D.C. in the past, but not since visiting as kids. Our first morning we had breakfast and coffee at Slipstream (see avocado toast & coffee below) while we planned out our revised itinerary for the trip. (Note: Our first day was a Monday and we were surprised to find that a decent amount of places we’d considered going to weren’t open on Monday. Just a reminder to confirm open hours in advance for any trip you’re on!) We stayed at the Hay-Adams Hotel which is directly across Lafayette Square from The White House. Its traditional decor was incredibly executed and we enjoyed having tea both days at their bar, Off The Record. Close to the hotel is the Renwick Gallery, which was incredibly beautiful and unique, as it’s filled with a “collection of contemporary craft and decorative art”. Afterwards, we walked down to the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, happy to be enjoying some warm sunshine.
After a good amount of walking, we worked up an appetite for a snack! We took a cab to Colada Shop, a Cuban coffee shop, where we had a coffee, some sweets and plantain chips, which gave us a good buzz to keep going. After a bit of walking around, we all realized that our stomachs were rumbling and that it was time for lunch, so off we went to All Purpose Pizzeria. After agreeing on which pizzas to share, we chatted away about our plans for dinner and the following day’s activities.
And on the way out from pizza, we noticed that one of the bakeries on our list, Buttercream Bakeshop, was right next door. This is a little slice of dessert paradise. Those are unicorn blondies below and gem shaped oreos(!!!). They had some of the prettiest desserts and treats we’d ever seen. It was a tough call, but in the end, we felt we had to split a slice of cake and a cookie.
For dinner that evening, we made our way to Rose’s Luxury in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. They don’t take reservations so we showed up a few minutes before they opened. To our surprise, a queue had already formed, though we were lucky and were seated soon after (a feat we are told that is quite rare). This was our favorite meal of the trip! We’d read rave reviews and knew it was going to be a great dinner, so naturally we over-ordered but ended up devouring everything. It was exceptional!
The next day, our last of the trip, we decided that we had to at least take a visit down to the Tidal Basin, the spot in D.C. most famously known for Cherry Blossom trees. We did go all that way to see the trees after all! On our way down there, we stopped in to pick up some Cherry Blossom doughnuts from Astro Doughnuts. As you can see in some of these pictures, we found a few full blooms, a lot that had been severely injured by the storm and a lot more still un-bloomed, but still a beautiful pre-Spring sight.
We spent our final afternoon in Georgetown. First stopping in for another delicious doughnut (we were on a serious sugar high) and coffee at District Doughnut. We got the baklava doughnut and Rose got the creme brûlée- both equally delicious. We walked through the neighborhood and then back down to the main shopping streets, eventually stopping at Tuckernuck, the brick and mortar store of one of my favorite online shops. It’s a blue and white lover’s paradise, as the store is filled with the combination, among other things. I picked up a few items including this striped top worn here, this floral dress and this white dress. Our final stop before heading to the airport was Chaia, which was a great savory lunch of vegetarian tacos, a nice balance to all of the sweets we’d had. This trip was short & sweet and made us excited for another trip back soon!
