At the start of last week, Thomas and I drove down to Amelia Island for a few days. We’ve been on a mission to explore more of our new surrounding areas and had heard wonderful things about this relaxing beach town in Florida. It’s the southernmost of the Sea Islands and is a little less than a four hour drive from Charleston. We timed it perfectly too, as a big rain storm was coming down hard at home just as we were leaving. Road trips are always nice because there’s minimal advanced plans and less luggage needed, and they are much more go with the flow.

We stayed at a charming bed & breakfast located right on the beach just outside of downtown called Elizabeth Point Lodge. The location was perfect and we loved how quiet and serene it was. They have a big wrap around porch lined with rocking chairs on the backside of the lodge that looks over the ocean, making the perfect spot to stop and sit with your morning coffee, which of course we did. And although we didn’t spend too much time at it, there’s miles and miles of the sandy beach to explore.

The Lodge is just a short drive from Historic Downtown Amelia Island, which is where we ate most of our meals (except breakfast back at the hotel) and spent a lot of time walking around. We were actually surprised by how much the downtown had to offer with dining and shopping and how big it was, about 50 blocks. It’s full of character with its Victorian-era architecture, colorful shops and picturesque homes. Our first day we had dinner at Timoti’s Seafood Shack and ordered the fish tacos, followed by a delicious dinner of tapas and paellas at España the next evening. On our last morning/afternoon, we started the day off with some iced chai lattes at Amelia Island Coffee, a mediterranean lunch at Sabbia and ice cream at Fantastic Fudge.

We popped into a few antique shops and walked out with some round wicker baskets and vintage tea cups (which I’ve been collecting all over). We’ve been slowly trying to find a few vintage or antique pieces for our house, which we luckily have a while to find as it’s going to be quite some time until our house is completed!

We kept exploring, wandering through the marina, more neighborhoods and into Fernandina Beach. I can see why this is a favorite getaway spot for so many – it has the characteristics and amenities that we all want while still being laid back and peaceful at the same time. Sadly, it seemed just as soon as we had arrived, we had to go. We packed up our bags and hopped back in the car, making plans to come back down and find see more of this area in the near future.
