Today we are excited to introduce our dear friend, Lucy Cuneo, as our Tablescape Contributor! When Lucy is not traveling the world photographing incredible weddings or working on her lifestyle blog, she can be found crafting tablescapes for the perfect gathering and roaming the streets of Charleston with her husband, Will and baby boy Rory. Inspired by travel, the sea, romance, and timeless beauty, Lucy has incorporated her own eye for style and design into her photographs. A creative at heart, Lucy loves crafting the perfect gathering for an event, just as much as she loves capturing it with her camera. We’ve collaborated with Lucy many times in the past, and we noticed her gift for creating the perfect setting. Through this Tablescape Contributor Series, Lucy will show you how to style a winsome gathering place that will more than impresses your guests. You will learn how to present the desired feeling through your tablescape for an array of themed events. Lucy is your guide and key to unlock Pinterest-worthy table arrangements. After you’re finished reading this post, head over to GMG Now to read the interview we did with Lucy.
I am so grateful to be invited to contribute to Gal Meets Glam and I feel lucky to count Thomas and Julia as close friends.
Setting the table has long been a hobby of mine and I consider it to be one of my great loves. It has been my thing since childhood – my first ‘business’ was party planning for children. I was 13 and I would set elaborate, colorful tables for birthday parties, full of overflowing dishes of candy and table games, with enough markers to color the whole (paper) table cloth – it was the best!
Now that I have had my fill of gummy bears, I like to view the table as the first opportunity to set a mood for celebration. It is a way to show my guests, friends or family, that I have been thinking of them and that I am so excited that they are here. In other words, it is a wonderfully visual form of welcome and it is a gesture of love. Even a casual table set with care shows the gathering people around that it’s a thoughtful and important opportunity for us to come together.
This table celebrates Mother’s Day and some fleeting seasonal spring flowers, Lilac and Lily of the Valley. If you have never smelled Lily of the Valley, it is worth seeking out – what a treat! Lilac comes in so many shades that make my heart sing; this was brought by hand from Annapolis by Anne Bowen of Charleston Stems.
With Mother’s Day on the horizon, what could be more fun than hosting a little family brunch party outside in the garden? We imagine little ones buzzing around, grown ups relaxing under the gazebo and eating brunch, including smoked salmon, croissants and locally grown berries.
I have nothing but admiration for Julia’s aesthetic, unreservedly feminine and elegant, and I wanted the first table photographed for her blog to mirror her embrace of all things pretty, in this case the bounty of these beautiful spring flowers. I love the feminine, ruffled Juliska plates and the scalloped-edge of these chic Pottery Barn napkins. Both keep the palate neutral enough to celebrate the lilac but are still decisively feminine. I do not have many table setting “rules” (because I would probably break them!) but I do always set out two glasses: one for water and one for another celebratory drink — wine, elderflower cordial, or fresh grapefruit juice with a splash of fizzy water. I keep the napkin to the left of the plate unless I run out of room (in which case it can go on the plate) and, call me old-fashioned, but I love a good placemat! We have a little GIF here to show you how we set this particular table.
I think one thing that I am grateful for is that my love for tables started so young, when there were no rules and we could just be free and creative. I think about the event — time of day, formal or informal, specific celebration or simple gathering, and set the table with the intention of making it as inviting as possible. From experience, I have learned that people sense immediately when you have set the table with care and they feel honored and welcomed by your thoughtfulness. Above all, have fun setting your own table and give your creativity free reign!
