My love for easy dressing is one of the reasons why I prefer dresses. But another versatile option that works really well for both work and social events is a jumpsuit. The classic pant-style jumpsuit became popular back in the late 60’s, early 70’s when women were exploring comfortable ways to incorporate pants into everyday wear. The idea caught on, most likely because of the easy, loose-leg fit and slinky fabrics, though not everyone found the fit flattering.

The 80’s introduced more bold, loud and even mini jumpsuits in different fabrics ranging from simple cotton to taffeta, shiny silks and satins. Exaggerated shoulders were built-in to give the illusion of a smaller waist. Shorts-style jumpsuits were worn with blazers to work by day and high heels at night, making it an extremely popular choice for it’s versatility.

Today, the traditional fitted pantsuit remains at the core of an ever-evolving style. There are many different variations to choose from in length, width, fabric and cut, including halter, off-the-shoulder, cropped, wide leg, flared, ruffled and more. My personal favorite styles, shown here, here, and here, include a cropped wide leg and fitted bodice with a simple neckline and sleeve, and maybe an added detail like a bow, belt or cut-out back.
