When given the opportunity to get my hair done by a professional, I always go for something that’s different than what I normally do. I trust their expertise and opinion and always want to learn how to duplicate the styles they do, by watching them and picking their brain as they go. When I was in NYC with TRESemmé, I worked with Johanna throughout the week she’s a braid queen, so obviously I wanted to tap into her skills. After wearing my hair in a low, knotted ponytail, we went for a half-up hairstyle on the second day of fashion week.

To get the curls for the half up-do, Johanna used a wand, curling small bits as she went. They were pretty bouncy when we first started, which were gorgeous, but I liked them even better as they fell out slightly throughout the day. For the top portion of the hair, she twisted back the two front sections, bringing them together in the back and then fishtail braiding them down, into one piece. The finished result was sweet and effortless, and was different than anything I’ve done on my own. I’ve always been partial to a twist-back hairstyle, but I love the new addition of a braid to it.

On the following day, Johanna and I decided to pull my hair all up since the temps were getting warmer. I’ve never been able to master the crown braid (I can do heidi-style on my own), so that’s what we went for. I made sure to take notes this time, and luckily, Johanna is a fantastic teacher, so she has tons of tips for me. One of them being, as you’re braiding, to only grab hair from the side you want the braid to lay on. For example, we wanted the braid to lay on the outside, so she only grabbed hair from the inside. Make sense? Take a closer look at the braid and you’ll see the sections of hair (on the inside of the braid) that were grabbed to make it go round. I’m definitely working on mastering this one down.

I have my favorite hair products from TRESemmé that I’ve been using for years, like the Perfectly Undone Sea Salt Spray and Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray (to protect against heat), but was introduced to a few new products that I made sure to bring home with me like the Beauty-Full Volume Flexible Finish Hairspray (that doesn’t leave your hair stiff) and the Botanique Nourish & Replenish Hydrating Mist (for a bit of extra nourishment and to de-tangle). I don’t always wash my hair everyday but since it was so hot during fashion week I showered at the end of each day. This year, to help deal with the heat and humidity I tried out the TRESemmé Climate Protection Shampoo and Conditioner and loved the results. Next up, I’ll be sharing a how-to on one of my favorite looks I saw backstage, so stay tuned!
