On our first day in Vermont, after we arrived in Burlington, we drove straight to our B&B, The Pitcher Inn. We even made it just in time for a late breakfast (and you do not want to miss their breakfast!). After some recommended exploration destinations from the hotel manager, we set our sights on Shelburne, VT. Rose and I freshened up quickly in our rooms while the guys prepped our afternoon ahead. We hopped in the car and picked a slightly slower route, with hopes it would be more scenic. It didn’t disappoint. One feature we love about Google Maps is that as you are driving, it will show you the expected ETA of another route. This is especially helpful on roadtrips where driving is half the fun. If a different turn looks more scenic and only adds a few minutes to our drive, we almost always take it!

On this drive to Shelburne, we found this beautiful alpaca farm. The alpacas were shades of different colors, just like the changing leaves surrounding the farm in the distance. I have a serious soft spot for alpacas, especially after stalking them our entire Peru trip and have an ongoing convo with Carly & Garrett about retiring in Vermont with an alpaca farm. Not even joking. After a few snaps with one of my favorite animals on the planet we jumped back in the car.

We stopped in the town of Shelburne briefly to see if we could get something to eat and we immediately saw the County Store. It’s filled with all sorts of delicious sugar filled treats and while Thomas and I left empty handed (we had our eyes set on the apple cider donuts to come), Rose couldn’t resist the maple syrup creemee (aka soft serve ice cream). We also found quite a large pile of orange leaves that we had to go and run through, because Fall. Thomas spent the next five minutes picking pieces of leaves out of my hair.

We then made our way to Shelburne Farms, which is a massive property on Lake Champlain. It took some convincing of the security guard in order to let us explore by car, normally you can only drive your own car if you have a reservation at the Inn or you are coming for an event. We drove up to the Inn, which is a beautiful 19th Century Home where you can stop for tea/coffee or drinks if you’re there a bit later.

Next stop was Shelburne Orchards. We indulged in our first hot cider and donuts of the trip while relaxing in this beautiful scenery. We had future plans of apple picking, so we didn’t partake there, though it would have been a fantastic spot. It is maybe one of the cutest apple/pumpkin/everything fall orchards we’ve seen. Our Londoners were getting the ultimate American experience here. Afterwards, we headed home and this time we found an even more scenic route. We drove through some cute towns and then up through the Lincoln Gap, which we ended up returning to the next day for sunset because the golden glow was unbelievable (see last photos from this post).

Once back, we were exhausted from a long day of traveling so we put on comfier clothes and lit fires in the fireplaces in our rooms. In case we didn’t have enough sugar earlier, we made a bunch of s’mores for the 4 of us. That ended up being our appetizer for a delicious meal in the restaurant at The Pitcher Inn. By the end of dinner, we were ready for bed on our first night of our trip. We put on PJs and hopped into bed, watching the crackling fireplace as our preferred form of evening entertainment. As the flames smoldered we fell asleep with big smiles on our faces.
