A few weeks ago Thomas and I loaded our Pure Cycles bicycles up into our car, threw on some warm clothes and headed out to Sullivan’s Island (our favorite Charleston beach) before the sun rose. We love to get up for sunrise when we are somewhere new but we rarely do it, for enjoyment purposes, when we are home. This trip reminded us of why we love getting an early start to the day. The beach was empty and quiet, the weather had a slight chill but wasn’t too cold and the tide was heading out, making room for us to ride our bicycles on the compact sand. Thanks to our Hydroflasks (I have the mint color), we even got to enjoy hot coffee that we brought from home.

Outdoor outfits are all about layers that you can bring with you to add or be able to shed if you get overly hot. Two of my layering staples are my Patagonia Better Sweater, which I have in multiple colors and my Patagonia Down Jacket. I’ve found some similar under $100 alternatives from today’s outfit that you can get via the REI Co-op brand. I like this Co-op sweater (less than $50) and this Co-op down jacket (less than $100).

When we are looking for outdoor gear, REI has always been the first place we check. Back when we lived in California, we’d normally make a trip to stock up right before heading out on a trip, like to Alaska a few years back. One of the things that makes REI so special are it’s REI Co-op membership benefits. While everyone can take advantage of the 10% back on purchases in the form of dividends (aka credits for future purchases) there are additional benefits like access to shop the REI Garage sales which are in store only sales of lightly used and returned gear. Right now, during the Member Rewards Sale that lasts through 4/9, members receive 20% off any full price item with the code, MEMPERKS (see here for details).

Long walks on the beach are great, but long bike rides on the beach might be even better. This morning bike ride felt so refreshing, which we really needed. Life and work can overwhelm us sometimes, and while it might feel natural to either hunker down and work more or lounge around and relax, we haven’t found a better alternative to getting outdoors and being active. There’s nothing quite like the feeling Thomas and I get reconnecting with being outside. Sometimes going for a hike, heading to the beach, working out or doing any number of similar activities are the best way to hit refresh for our bodies and minds.
