If I had to choose my three biggest sources of inspiration, both for designing and for putting together my outfits, they would be travel, the seasons, and classic movies. I always go back to these three things–reminiscing about our travels over the years, considering what’s in bloom and how the air feels in a given month, and scrolling through iconic photos of my favorite style icons–whenever I’m feeling stuck in a rut. Lately, old photos of Katharine Hepburn looking confident and elegant in oversized blazers, plus all of the time we’ve been spending in New York City, have been stirring up some new creativity for me, and I had both on my mind when I wore this outfit one day in New York.

My camel coats are some of my favorite pieces of outerwear, and I’ve come to believe that a camel blazer is just as much of a classic wardrobe staple. I have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to wear this one from Rag & Bone, which I found at Saks Fifth Avenue. Neutral colored outerwear, which you’ll wear often and with all different outfits, is always a safe investment, but neutral certainly doesn’t have to mean boring. There are different silhouettes out there that can suit every girl’s personal style–inspired by Katharine Hepburn, I opted for one with a longer cut and a double-breasted front. I know it’ll add an extra touch of personality to plenty of outfits over the coming months, and since it’s such a timeless piece, for many years to come.

I layered the blazer over a lightweight ivory cashmere sweater (such a good layering piece to have on hand this season) and paired it with green leather pants–my first purchase this year in one of my favorite colors for fall. Leather pants (definitely the piece in this outfit most inspired by our time in New York) are surprisingly easy to style, especially when they come in a muted color that tones down the “edginess” a little. As the weather cools, I’m looking forward to wearing these pants with tall boots, but in the meantime, these suede booties might be my favorite pair of shoes for early fall. The block heel makes it easy to run around the city in them, and I think they’ll pair just as well with dresses and skirts as they do with these pants.

Since we’re often lugging laptops and cameras around the city, I welcomed the opportunity to trade my packed-to-the-brim work tote with this Mateo purse, which has all the sophistication of a leather satchel, but in a charming, miniature size. The all-cognac version is beautiful too!

Most of the pieces I’m wearing here, plus hundreds more, are 25% off at Saks Fifth Avenue this week for their Friends and Family event. Their designer styles are rarely discounted, so if you’ve been thinking of investing in a timeless piece for your fall wardrobe that will last for years to come, it just may be the perfect time to do so. In addition to clothes and shoes, jewelry is also on sale at 20% off. Finally, beauty and fragrance items can be found at 10% off with the code SAKSFF18 through 10/5. (Please note that exclusions apply; see site for details.)
