Back To The Basics: My Go-To Jeans

As summer begins to give way to fall, I always take a quick inventory of my denim collection. After it has been sitting mostly untouched throughout the summer (besides the one pair of maternity jeans I bought out of necessity in chilly Northern Ireland), I know it’s not too far away before I’ll be reaching for my favorite jeans again. After going through each pair, I can easily arrange a few favorite staples in the front of my closet, donate any styles that no longer resonate with me, and brainstorm which new denim looks I may want to experiment with during the coming season.

The one style that always holds a place in my collection is a classic pair of skinny jeans. I love the timeless, clean look they create that pairs so well with practically any top in my closet. The pairs I reach for the most often have an ankle-length hem and a high rise (perfect for styling with cropped jackets, like our Gal Meets Glam Collection tweed jackets—we have more coming this fall that I can’t wait to share!), like these and these. For a trendy twist on this classic silhouette, I love the button front and raw hem of this Madewell pair.

While I will never tire of my skinnies, the denim I’ve been gravitating toward over the past year tends to have a more relaxed fit. This includes straight leg jeans and cropped wide leg jeans. The inherently loose feel of these styles makes them more comfortable for walking around or traveling, which are the occasions when I opt for denim the most often. I love to pair denim styles like this and this with a t-shirt and tennis sneaker on the weekends, or a block heel and statement top for going out to dinner.

While tradition dictates that we’re not supposed to wear white after Labor Day, I embrace white denim year-round, especially when it comes to my favorite white denim. This skinny pair and this wide-leg cropped pair, to name just a few, are the ideal starting points for feminine fall looks and crisp, winter white outfits.

Everlane Kick Crop Jeans

I love the subtle flare of these Everlane jeans, which lengthens the leg for an especially flattering look. The light wash and raw hem make this pair casual enough to wear daily with a white tee, but you could also dress them up easily with a silk blouse.

Rebecca Taylor Ines Kick Bootcut Jeans

Rebecca Taylor is known for feminine pieces, and the Ines Kick Bootcut Jeans are no exception. The raw hem gives these white jeans a laid-back feel, which I would pair with sandals or a block heel.

AG Prima Ankle Skinny Jeans

A simple skinny jean is a closet staple and this pair from AG checks all the boxes. They’re skinny, but not skin-tight, so they’re comfortable enough to go from travel days to relaxing days at home. The medium wash transitions effortlessly from season to season.
