The weather in Charleston has finally caught up to many of the places we’ve been traveling to over the last few weeks! If you live somewhere in the Northern hemisphere that experiences all four seasons, I’m guessing it probably feels like fall by now too. Out of every season, this is my favorite time of year to experiment with layers–it’s chilly enough to wear layered looks, but not so cold that my whole outfit needs to be covered up by a coat as soon as I step outside. As we make our way into the colder months, I rely on a few staple types of jackets, which ensure I feel comfortable and occasion-ready in any situation.

A Raincoat or Waterproof Jacket: Whether you’re shielding yourself from rain, mist, or wind, a raincoat or waterproof jacket comes in handy often this time of year. Barbour is my go-to source of weatherproof jackets because even though their pieces are highly functional, they also fit beautifully and include a few charming details, like a plaid lining.

A Chic Trench: Ever the classic, I believe every girl should have a beige trench in her closet. I’ve had my Burberry one for years, and wear it constantly throughout both the fall and the spring. It’s the first thing I reach for when I need a waterproof outer layer, but want to keep my look polished and elegant. Since they are roomier than shorter, fitted jackets, they’re also perfect for throwing on over thick sweaters during that in-between time when you don’t need a heavy coat quite yet.

A Playful Tweed Jacket: Tweed jackets are my go-to outer layers for fall weekends, days in the office, errands, and date nights. The fabric has a timeless, nostalgic feel that I can’t get enough of, and I love the way it dresses up or down so effortlessly. We’ve had so much fun creating a handful of custom tweeds for the Gal Meets Glam Collection fall lines–they’re the tweeds I’ve always dreamed of wearing. The Tinsley jacket has been one of my most-worn pieces this fall (seen herehere, and here), and we just released two brand new jackets in the Nell (a gorgeous burgundy and cream) and Katherine (a combination of blues and silver with a kiss of pink) tweeds.

A Fleece Pullover: While I prefer to dress up more on most days, my Patagonia pullover still gets plenty of wear. I reach for it on crisp early mornings, relaxed Saturdays at home, and for practically any outdoor adventure in the fall, and am always happy to have it on hand to cozy up in. You can find fleece pullovers in so many different colors, but I like to stick to neutral options for a more classic look.
