The start of a new season is a perfect reminder to clean-out my makeup bag. Even if products still look in mint condition, most actually have a limited shelf life. I definitely don’t want to risk getting a reaction to using old makeup, especially items used around my eyes. Makeup that’s not used as often, like eye shadows and lipsticks are most at risk. Here’s a list of 5 signs to alert you when makeup may need to be ‘let go’. And if you have a helpful tip to share, please let us know!

Sign – Flakey, clumpy or dry mascara (may smell funny as well).
Replace: At least every three months.

Sign – Crumbling eye shadow that’s drying out, has lost it’s color, or has an oily sheen.
Replace: Every year or two.

Sign – Separating liquid foundation that smells or changes color. Makeup sticks used directly on the skin. Powder makeup tends to last the longest.
Replace: Every 6 months to one year.
Tip: You can slightly prolong the shelf-life by using clean brushes or sponges.

Sign – Separating liquid in concealer, or too much direct use on skin (concealer sticks). Though they may be the quickest way to cover-up a blemish, concealers can also become contaminated easily, making blemished worse.
Replace: Once a year or sooner, depending on use.

Sign – Oils in a lipstick can go bad, dry out out, or even emit a strange odor.
Replace: Once a year.
Tip: Gently wipe off the top layer of lipstick with a makeup remover cloth to extend the life of a lipstick.

Final tip: To extend the life of cosmetics even further, store them in a cool, dry spot away from moisture.
