Makeup Tips & Tricks: Favorite Shades of Blush

One of the last steps in my makeup routine is to add blush. I always use to believe that blush was an optional step, except maybe for special occasions. I thought that a light stroke of bronzer beneath my cheek bones was all I needed. But I recently learned I was wrong. Adding just the right amount of blush in the correct color on certain areas of the face is like a youth serum, enhancing features in a very subtle way.

There are definite dos and don’ts when selecting a blush shade and the right application technique. For example, blush comes in powders, liquids, creams, sticks and stains. There are makeup artists who swear that by adding a layer of each, blush is sure to last all day. Obviously, this is major overkill. One is all you need. I’ve found that the best way to decide on a blush is to actually try it. See how it works on your skin – too oily, dry or blotchy? The right formulation will blend-in, not just sit on top of the skin.

Shade selection should focus on less color instead of more. Blush shouldn’t stand out. The idea is to create a slightly flushed look, as if you’ve just come in from a crisp winter run. A hint of pink, a warm rosy glow. Natural. Look at your skin for warm or cool tones, which will help you select the right shade.

When applying blush, most people think it’s just to the apple of the cheek – the round spot at the tip of the cheek bone. But blush should actually be applied above the cheekbone in the same direction all the way to the hairline. One rule of thumb is to never wear blush beneath the cheek bone because it will actually drag the face down. Lift facial features with properly applied blush in the perfect shade for a natural, youthful glow. For evenings out or special occasions, either add just a bit more blush, or go for a more bold color. Just make sure that your lip color isn’t in competition with your blush. Rule of thumb is if you wear more blush color, then opt for a lighter lip color. And if you want to wear a bold lip color, then select a more subtle cheek color.

A few of my favorite blush shades include Bobby Brown in “Peony”, YSL Kiss & Blush in “Rose Libre”, Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in “Rose” (I use this one almost every day!) and Marc Jacobs Blush in “Reckless”.
