We’re in the midst of summer, but the fashion industry is in full swing, sharing new styles begging for cooler days. And while I’m dying to wear the stylish new jackets, sweaters and slacks now, it would definitely look ridiculous in the sweltering heat. So how do I add these styles to my wardrobe before it’s actually fall?  By selecting 5 key pieces light enough to wear now and perfect to layer-up in later on so you’ll be well on your way to surviving the pre-fall lull. Read on to see my 5 “fall lull” staples:

First up? A light blazer in a favorite fall color. This is a perfect pre-fall transition piece. I’ll wear it now with shorts, a skirt, short-sleeved tee or cold shoulder top. Later, I’ll style it with a long sleeved blouse, cotton turtleneck or pullover and slacks.

A light weight long cardigan is great to take on trips (mine doubles as an extra blanket on the plane), and looks chic whether dressed up or down over any summertime outfit. I make sure to have mine with me when I know I’ll be sitting in an air conditioned space all day, like our office. Later in the fall, I’ll wear it over a pullover and button down.

I love to wear blouses, especially right now because they’re such a comfortable summer option.  My favorites have soft lines and feminine or vintage details including buttons, ruffles or lace or an embroidered collar, or unique statement sleeve. I’ll continue wearing them well into fall under a blazer, jacket, sweater or jumper-style dress.

A light-weight pull-over is one of those items I tend to collect in an assortment of colors. I wear mine thrown over my shoulders for late summer evening walks on the beach. As fall draws near I’ll pair one with a beautiful silk scarf, pants and loafers, or a nice equestrian-style vest.

Light weight and cropped jackets are another staple that I’ll wear with shorts or sundress now, and wear in the latest army green, denim, cotton and tweed with white jeans well beyond Labor Day. Later in the season, I’ll continue to wear them over a sweater with a pair of suede booties for the full fall effect.
